Event, dedicated to the 210 birthday anniversary of Alexander Nordmann
The historical project Great and Unknown, launched by Research Library and University Museum has lasted for about three years.
On May 28 the event, dedicated to210th birth anniversary of the famous scientist, first director of our educational institution Alexander Nordmann was conducted with support of the Faculty of Horticulture and Forestry in the reading room № 2 of Research Library.
The report about his lifetime and scientific achievements was made by the student Maria Mikhailova, who spoke about his family, his student’s years at the universities in Abo (Finland) and Berlin (Germany), about his famous mentors Count von Mannerheim and Christian von Steven. She told the audience that Alexander Nordmann was Professor of botany, zoology and geodesy at Richelieu Lyceum in Odesa for 17 years (1832-1849), as well as about his scientific expeditions to the Crimea and the Caucasus. Alexander Nordmann found a particular variety of fir-tree, which wasn’t described previously and that was named after him Abies nordmannsana.
Head of the University Museum Larysa Tsymbrovska spoke about the Main School of Gardening, which was founded in Odesa in 1844. The head of the school became Professor Nordmann. The School was transferred from Odesa to Uman in 1855.
On April 19, Dean of the Faculty of Horticulture and Forestry Olexader Zamorskyi and students Vadym Bezzubenko, Vadym Zaplatynsky, Eugen Kobernyk, Dmitro Chebanov planted a fir-tree in honour of Professor Alexander Nordmann.
