The Aberystwyth University offers approximately new 12 DCDS awards and 3 additional President’s scholarships for the September 2014 intake. PhD scholarships are available for UK/EU or non-EU students. The Aberystwyth University doctoral (PhD) scholarship (DCDS) scheme offers a package of research, training and career development for full-time PhD students. Applicants have or expect to obtain at least upper second class honours in their first degree and achievement of 7.0 in IELTS, or equivalent, as the normal case, for non-UK students (before the end of March 2014 at the latest).

Eligibility:

Scholarship Description: The Aberystwyth University doctoral (PhD) scholarship (DCDS) scheme offers a package of research, training and career development for full-time PhD students. These awards are tailored to enable students to develop the necessary skills required to meet their career choices and offer a breadth of development opportunities to enhance their research, teaching and transferable skills. Students within the scheme will make an agreed contribution to the Department and University as a condition of the PhD scholarship. Teaching is not the only option though. The career development contribution could involve research, editorial work, professional placements, or other personal development opportunities which are also helpful to the Department concerned.

Number of award(s): There will be approximately new 12 DCDS awards and 3 additional President’s scholarships available for the September 2014 intake.

Duration of award(s): Scholarships will be offered for three years.

What does it cover? Successful candidates will receive a grant for up to three years which will cover their tuition fees (up to the UK/EU rate of approx. £3900) and also provide them with a maintenance allowance of approximately  £13,726 per annum and access to a travel and conference fund (max. £500 per annum). Scholarships commence from the main intake: September 2014. There will be approximately new 12 DCDS awards available for the September 2014 intake. Non-EU students would have to cover the difference between UK/EU tuition fees and the non-EU tuition fees (approx. £8,350 to £8,600) from their scholarship. However, there will be 3 additional President’s Scholarships, which cover this difference in tuition fees. These will be awarded to the three highest ranked non-EU candidates for the DCDS competition.

Selection Criteria: Judgments on the candidate’s proposal and his/her potential as a researcher two academic references for each candidate.
-Evidence of why the proposal was prioritized by the relevant Departmental Committee.
-Evidence that the candidate is capable of completing the proposed thesis within the required deadline.

Scholarship Application Deadline: The University’s general deadline for the 2014 competition is the 1st March 2014 and the deadline for the Department of International Politics and the Department of Geography & Earth Sciences is 31st January 2014.
